West Somerton village in Norfolk, England, UK.
West Somerton lies on the East Coast of Norfolk. East Somerton lies somewhere under the North Sea! It is a pretty village ideal for your summer holiday.
One of the villages claims to fame is that Robert Hales, known as the Norfolk giant, lies buried in a table-tomb on the south side of the parish church at West Somerton.
The church itself is well worth a look as it is one of the few Round Tower churches that remain. Robert was born in West Somerton as the son of a local farmer, he had three brothers and five sisters. Robert himself grew to a height of 7 feet 8 inches and he weighed over 32 stone. His siblings measured a mere 6 feet 5 inches on average. He appeared at fairs and shows throughout England, and in 1848 he visited the USA.
When he returned from America he became licensee of the Craven Head Tavern in London, where his height was one of the attractions to customers. The friendly giant became prominent and is believed to have been invited to meet Queen Victoria. He died at the age of 50 at Great Yarmouth on 22nd November 1865.
